GenderArtNet has been developed through a longer editorial process during several workshops and meetings held in Berlin from March 2008 to Fall 2009.
The weblaunch took place in Berlin on 16th April 2010 with contributions by Femke Snelting (artist, designer, Constant vzw, Brussels & De Geuzen, Amsterdam), Bojana Pejic (curator, Berlin) and members of GenderArtNet editorial group.
In the following we would like to give an insight in some of the intricacies of the development process.
Keywording- Where should laughter go?
During the process many discussions emerged around the titles of the galaxies and keywording. This is an example of one of these conversations.
A: I don't really see the gaze and representation together with masquerade/camouflage/role-play. I would see much more masquerade/camouflage/role-play with laughter in a different galaxy, referred to strategies. And I agree anyway that strategies should be everywhere ... hmm.
B: The gaze and representation do relate, as masquerade/camouflage. And also laughter is a counterstrategy: “avoiding or subverting the dominant gaze or ‘fucking with’ the politics of representation.” But you are right, the combination is awkward in the sense that these are each very specific counterstrategies, and surely not the only ones.
C: I think it is more interesting to keep them separate, and would not worry about adding one more galaxy.
D: Laughter works better than humour for me, in this galaxy and not in the next. My only reason to merge these two galaxies was, that I think we have too many, which will be confusing, when they are displayed all together. What do you think, is that an issue? One or two galaxies??
B: I don't see laughter here that much either ... And also, I would keep a galaxy just for sex (for its own sake!)! A: I agree. It fits much better with the masquerade thread.
B: Yes, OK, let's put it there. I think it is a good proposal.
Pictograms and design
The following images show the research around distribution of topics in space: how to connect geographical localisation of artists, artworks and networks with topics?

The following images show tests on 3D visualizations aiming to compare authomatic data ( authomatically extracted from the database) and subjective data (proposed by the editorial group):
